Where to begin with your new wood working tools?

This will always be a difficult question for new DIY men and women making their first forays into building their own tables, chairs and cupboards. Perhaps they were never erudite with their hands before? Or perhaps they were always used to the costly exercise of contracting others to do their home improvement projects for them? But with the right proactive attitude, proper planning and wood working tools, there is no reason why any man or woman, no matter that they have never done this before, can succeed.

DIY is the acronym for doing things yourself, after all. But in the beginning there will always be a long list of questions. That’s alright. That’s how the process begins. Which project do you have in mind to begin with? And what tools or machines will you need for this? One good piece of advice is to begin on a much smaller scale. You want to craft antique-styled chairs to go with the large table. And to accompany it, you want matching cabinets and cupboards. You do realize how much work goes into this project. Begin with something small, say a small coffee table for the living room. For that too, you may also be starting with a small set of basic tools. After you’ve finished your first project with a flourish, you can then progress to the next level.

The art of successful DIY projects is accompanied by the art of being quite patient. Artistic and impressive projects take time to complete. Pre-planning, drafting and lots of practice along with the worthwhile sweat goes into this too. Learning how to use your old elbow grease efficiently before you tackle the big project is also a worthwhile exercise.
